It’s easy to dismiss competitive language, also known as trash talk, as boastful, aggressive and rude. But Rafi Kohan, the author of a recent book on the subject, wants to change your mind about that starting with baseball. Opening day is tomorrow, and in this audio essay, Kohan argues that trash talk would not only bring some sorely needed excitement to the game but also could improve performance and create healthier relationships among sports teams — and maybe even in your own teams and workplaces. In this audio essay, the columnist Thomas L. Friedman proposes a three-pronged strategy for the president to address the widening crisis in the Middle East, which he calls the “Biden Doctrine.” The approach would focus on retaliating against Iran’s proxies in the region and supporting a Palestinian state. If successful, Friedman believes this plan could lead to the creation of a “credible, legitimate, effective, demilitarized Palestinian state that can live in peace and security with Israel.”(A full transcript of this audio essay will be available midday on the Times website.)

How you train your dog was once a fairly innocuous decision — to leash or not, to reward with treats or not. Now, training styles and methods can be as much about identity as efficacy: Are you imposing colonial concepts on your dog? Are you harming their mental health? Is your style of training “woke?”In this audio essay, Alicia Wittmeyer shares her journey into the online rabbit hole of dog training and explains why dogs have become the next recruits in America’s culture wars. Donald Trump may not be on the stage for tonight’s Republican primary debate, but at least eight other candidates will still have to contend with his presence — and his lead in the polls. The Opinion columnist Michelle Goldberg argues that tonight is an opportunity for Trump’s opponents to convince Republican voters that they can be as dominant as the former president, but without the legal baggage. The question remains, though: Will the Republican base buy it? (A full transcript of this audio essay will be available midday on the Times website.)

Sophia Alvarez Boyd andDespite forceful opposition, Israel’s government passed a judicial reform law that limits the ability of the country’s Supreme Court to overrule the government. In this audio short, our columnist Tom Friedman explains how the new law could destabilize the United States’ relationship with Israel and complicate American interests in the Middle East. “We are in a completely new phase now of relations between America and the Jewish state,” Friedman says. How much are you willing to pay for a concert ticket? Some fans of Taylor Swift have reportedly paid more than $20,000 to see her perform live this summer. And now that Beyoncé’s tour has kicked off in the United States, the headlines about sky-high concert prices keep coming. But in this audio essay, the Opinion columnist and economist Paul Krugman makes the case that live music today is actually quite a bargain. As he explains in this audio essay, it’s a rule born of his experience debating Robert F. Kennedy Jr. back in 2006 — and one he wishes other people would adopt. So these elite places become these little islands where rich people pass down their advantages to their kids. Like everyone else, by today’s standards, I wouldn’t qualify for any of the elite schools. And yet in those days, the University of Chicago, where I ended up going, admitted 70 percent of the applicants. The process is not only divisive but doesn’t give people later in life a fair chance to alter the trajectory of their life. They should look at their grades, they should look at their test scores, but they should also look at their resilience.

Stephanie Joyce and Isaac Jones , Pat McCusker , Sonia Herrero andRepublican-led legislatures have recently made it clear what they don’t want taught in public school classrooms: sexuality, gender identity, structural racism. But when it comes to what they do want, one approach frequently arises: classical education. The central tenet of classical education is that students should focus on the Western canon, usually starting with the ancient Greeks. In 2015, he founded a company that developed the Classic Learning Test, or CLT, as an alternative to the College Board’s SAT.
